Those present:  His Majesty King Gregory of Bowling, David Fowler, Bonnie McIntyre, Donna Miles, Debbie Martin, Jan Roblin, Carol Burhans, John Paul Daniel, Calvin Liles, Sharon Bradley, Darlene Freemon, Rick McAdams, Lee Freeman, William Freeman, Ann Iaria, Mary Nicely, Perri Scott-Hawthorne, Sue Bevis, Mandi Green, Karen Ugrovics, Randall Ugrovics, Billy Warren

  1. Billy Warren:
    1. Stated that the Feast and Faire are just two months away;
    2. Reminded everyone that we will have two meetings in September:  Thursday, September 4, and Thursday, September 18; and
    3. Announced that Cathy Wood will include information about the Feast, the Faire and related activities in her new blog:  www.cathylwood.wordpress.com

  2. Billy Warren announced these actions by the Board of Directors at its meeting on July 24:
    1. The price of the Feast tickets will increase from $20 each to $25.
    2. A group of 25 tickets to the Feast will be available for entertainers @$15.
    3. There will be no fee for Roundtable members who wish to sell merchandise in the special booth to be set up for them at the Faire.  However, these stipulations apply:

                                                              i.      The merchandise must be related to the Medieval/Renaissance period;

                                                            ii.      Anyone wishing to sell merchandise must be willing to take a turn running the booth; and

                                                          iii.      All merchandise must be clearly marked with seller’s name, asking price and a notation indicating whether the price is firm or negotiable.

  1. Lee Freeman reviewed Chef Jim Matterer’s proposed menu for the Feast (which had been emailed to all Roundtable members prior to today’s meeting), noting suggestions offered by the group – which he will convey to Jim.  Everyone was impressed with the way Chef Jim developed a menu in keeping with the reign of a Pirate King!

  2. Darlene Freemon stated that she and Rick have been invited to the Michigan Renaissance Faire by Menagerie and will participate in a pirate-themed Feast there.  She will email information about her visit to all Roundtable members.

  3. Darlene Freemon announced that Renaissance Day at Florence High School has been set for Wednesday, October 22.  She encouraged all Roundtable members to come to the school in costume and to stay as long as possible.  Donna Miles agreed to visit Darlene’s classes ahead of Renaissance Day  to give students some ideas for creating costumes.

  4. It was agreed that the costume-making workshop will take place in the backyard studio at Kennedy-Douglass Art Center on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

  5. Calvin Liles reported that he had previously worked as a resident Medieval carpenter at Medieval Times in Florida.  He further stated his willingness to build a Medieval-style wooden cart (perhaps to be used as a “cart of shame” during the two days of the Faire).  Lee Freeman made the motion that up to $100 be allocated for Calvin to purchase materials to construct the cart.  Donna Miles seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

  6. Calvin Liles agreed to demonstrate Medieval-style carpentry at the Faire.  That’s the kind of activity that adds authentic period atmosphere to our two-day celebration!  There was a round of applause for Calvin.

  7. Mandi Green circulated a color photograph of Don’s most recent tapestry purchase on eBay.  It, like all the others which Don has so carefully purchased, is spectacular.

  8. Billy Warren circulated the current issue of Renaissance magazine.

  9. Lee Freeman announced that he is planning a series of Medieval/Renaissance-related films at the library instead of a lecture series.  The series will be sponsored by the public library.

  10. There was a discussion regarding servers for this year’s Feast.  Several ideas were suggested:  posting the need on bulletin boards at UNA, asking young people who must earn service hours as a requirement for club membership, etc.  Billy Warren asked everyone to give more thought to this issue so we can resolve it at the next Roundtable meeting on Thursday, September 4.

  11. In a drawing, Debbie Martin won a suede leather portfolio that holds legal-size notepads.  Ann Iaria won a copy of The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

  12. Billy Warren displayed an oversize packet containing copies of the winning sonnets in our sonnet-writing contest from 1987 to 2005.

  13. Lee Freeman circulated copies of color photographs of pirate costumes from the 16th century.

  14. William Freeman reported that the community theater group from Birmingham will probably not stage the Canterbury pilgrimage at this year’s Faire since he has not had a confirmation from the group.

  15. Donna Miles reported that she and Bonnie McIntyre have been collecting items to ship to Roundtable member Dan Cruz who is working at the U. S. Embassy in Iraq.  Dan will distribute the items to American troops there.  Billy Warren invited those who wished to give Donna and Bonnie money to purchase other items and to pay the postage on the package.
