ALABAMA RENAISSANCE FAIRE

Minutes of Meeting, 9-21-06

 

Those present:  Her Majesty Queen Freya, John Iaria, Darlene Freemon, Jan Roblin, Lee Freeman, William Freeman, Ralph Bowersox, Jim Lake, Sonny Phillips, Susie Rickard, Donna Miles, Bonnie McIntyre, Kim Lovelace, Aubrey Gaskins, Susan Key, John Holcomb, Carol Burhans, Chris Solid, Mary Nicely, Don Green, Mandi Green, Paul Daniel, Billy Warren

 

  1. Billy Warren noted that he e-mailed the revised schedule of events for Renaissance Month (October) to all Roundtable members on Wednesday, September 20.  He distributed paper copies to everyone present and asked for any needed corrections.  After receiving suggestions from the group, he stated that he would e-mail a corrected version to the Roundtable.

     
  2. Billy Warren distributed and reviewed copies of the special events in October to which Roundtable members have been invited to attend in full costume.  After receiving suggestions for corrections/additions/deletions, he stated that he would e-mail a corrected version to the Roundtable.

     
  3. The group gave a hearty round of applause to Susie Rickard for getting publicity for the Feast and Faire on Channel 59 on the cable (the channel dedicated to Northwest-Shoals Community College).

     
  4. These people accepted UNA’s invitation for Roundtable members to attend and perform at the Feast on the lawn of Coby Hall at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27:  Her Majesty Queen Freya, John Iaria, Paul Daniel, Laura Daniel, Jim Lake, Lee Freeman, William Freeman, Perri Hawthorne, Keith Hawthorne, John Holcomb, Donna Miles, Greg Miles, Bonnie McIntyre, Connie Sheffield, Lauren Sheffield, Ralph Bowersox, Menagerie (Lisa Butts, John Butts), Billy Warren, Susan Key, Chris Solis, Carol Burhans, Don Green, Mandi Green, Jan Roblin, Darlene Freemon.  Billy Warren reminded everyone that accepting an invitation to this event is a commitment to attend since UNA is expecting us to perform and, generally, add atmosphere to it.

     
  5. Lee Freeman announced these official titles for the three lectures at the public library:
    1. October 1 – “Voices of the Miraculous:  Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans,” by Lee Freeman
    2. October 8 – “Visions of Joan:  A Saint on the Silver Screen” by Terry Pace
    3. October 15 – “The Art of Firenze,” by Jan Roblin

       
  6. William Freeman distributed copies of the poster/flyer advertising “Pilgrim’s Progress,” the marionette show by David Simpich.  William asked everyone to post these in churches and other appropriate public places.

     
  7. These people agreed to operate sewing machines at the costume-making workshop on October 14:  Susan Key, Carol Burhans, Bonnie McIntyre and Don Green.

     
  8. Donna Miles:
    1. Stated that the movie, “Elizabeth I,” is excellent and recommended that everyone rent it for home viewing; and
    2. Recommended that everyone read the current issue of Renaissance magazine, its 50th.  It features short biographies of 50 famous personalities of the Renaissance period.

       
  9. Don and Mandi Green displayed a series of tapestries that they have purchased for approximately $157.  The Board of Directors authorized the expenditure of $300, so Don and Mandi will purchase more.  The tapestries will be used to decorate the canvas “walls” at the Feast and Faire.  Carol Burhans offered the use, also, of some tapestries that she owns.

     
  10. Lee Freeman circulated a copy of a Glossary of Medieval Terms that he is developing.  When he completes it, he will send it to Vince Brewton to be posted on our website.

     
  11. Carol Burhans donated a collection of ceramic angels to the Roundtable.  They will look terrific as decoration at the Feast.  There was applause for Carol’s excellent gift.

     
  12. Her Majesty Queen Freya:
    1. Displayed a series of shields made of thin plywood and trimmed with metal in Viking-era fashion which she will use to decorate the High Table at the Feast (they are great!); and
    2. Announced that her gown, whose style remains a secret until the Feast, is now being created.

       
  13. Susie Rickard stated that Northwest-Shoals Community College will provide seven servers for this year’s Feast.  Darlene Freemon added that her students will be available to serve, also, if needed.

     
  14. Carol Burhans recommended that everyone visit the exhibit of Egyptian artifacts now in progress at the Frist Center in Nashville.

     
  15. In a drawing, Don Green won a VHS of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”; Ralph Bowersox won a package of Werther’s candy.

     
  16. Darlene Freemon:
    1. Reported that Rick Freemon is almost finished with the design of Morgana (Morgan la Fey) who will grace the sixth coin of the realm in the Arthurian legends series of six; and
    2. Noted that 48 people have signed up for the trip to Italy in April, 2007, and reminded all who are going that $400 is due by September 30.

       
  17. Billy Warren circulated a copy of an article from the 9-13-06 issue of the Times-Daily which details the construction of a throne for the Enchanted Kingdom, the renovated room for children’s parties at the Children’s Museum of the Shoals.  Students in Rick Ashley’s class at Florence High School are featured in the article and in the accompanying photographs

     
  18. Billy Warren:
    1. Circulated a copy of the current issue of “Tower Talk,” the newsletter from the Florence-Lauderdale Tourism Bureau, which has articles and photographs advertising the Feast and the Faire;
    2. Announced that the Courier-Journal will publish its first monthly issue of a newspaper for students in grades K-6 entitled Kidsville News and will give copies to every student in the Shoals area in those grades; and
    3. Distributed copies of a short article on the Faire which he wrote for the Kidsville News and noted that photographs downloaded from our website will accompany the article.

       
  19. Billy Warren distributed copies of the 2006 poster to those who might need additional copies.

     
  20. Billy Warren reminded everyone that the Roundtable does not meet on Thursday, September 28, but meets each Thursday in October.
